Benjamin de Burca was born in Germany in 1975 and raised in Ireland. From 1995 to 1999 he studied painting at the Glasgow School of art and was awarded a BA (hons) in Fine Art specialising in painting. During this period de Burca also developed an interest in photography, which he has maintained throughout his artistic career.
After completing his degree, de Burca worked as a community based artist and was artistic coordinator / lead artist on an extensive range of projects which included adventure park design, animation, video media and advertisement projects, and the origination of an annual arts festival programme for the Greater Easterhouse area of Glasgow. He currently continues to work on outreach and cross community art projects in Belfast. As an artist, he feels it is vital to continue ones own practice, as much as it is to give back to the community and encourage a creative skills base to youth groups in less fortunate circumstances.
Before accepting a place on the Masters of Fine Art programme in the University of Ulster, de Burca had continued to exhibit his work both within the U.K. and internationally. These exhibitions have included a range of artistic expression including site specific installation, sculpture, photography, collage and painting.
After receiving a first class with distinction from the MFA program, de Burca completed two years as a co-director of the artist-led organisation Catalyst arts where he curated and installed a number of projects and exhibitions, wrote numerous articles for Irish press, made presentations in conferences and lectured in third level institutions in Ireland. He recently completed a commission for CIRCA, art magazine.
